A mobile auto electrician brings the workshop to you. In Sunraysia that often means a car that won't start in a car park off Deakin Avenue, a ute that's died on a block out past Red Cliffs, or a forklift sitting idle in a packing shed in Irymple. If the vehicle can't be driven, or moving it would cost you a day's work, a callout usually makes sense.
Some jobs still suit a workshop better. Complex fault-finding on modern cars can take hours and may need a hoist, special scan tools or parts on hand. Big fit-outs, like a full dual battery and solar set-up for a touring 4WD, are often easier in a workshop too. Many mobile auto electricians will tell you honestly when a job is better done at a bench, and that's a good sign.
If you're not sure, describe the problem and ask. A good auto electrician will tell you whether it's a roadside job or not. Our national guide on how to choose an auto electrician covers the general points, and the rest of this guide adds the local side.
Two states, one region
Sunraysia spans the Murray. Mildura, Irymple, Red Cliffs and Merbein are in Victoria. Buronga and Wentworth are over the river in NSW, in the Wentworth Shire. Plenty of auto electricians work on both sides, but don't assume. When you call, say exactly where you are, and ask whether there's a travel charge for your town. A callout to Buronga is a short trip over the George Chaffey Bridge. Wentworth is around 34 km from Mildura, so travel may cost more.
The state line also matters if your car is due for rego. Transport for NSW says most light vehicles more than five years old need a yearly safety check before renewal, done at an Authorised Inspection Scheme station. An auto electrician can fix a blown globe or faulty indicator before the check, but the check itself must be done by an authorised station. Victoria doesn't have a yearly inspection for private cars. Check the current rules for your state before you book.

What to tell them when you call
The more you can tell the auto electrician up front, the more likely they'll arrive with the right parts and tools. Have this ready before you ring:
- The make, model and year, and whether it's petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric.
- Whether it's a 12V or 24V system. Trucks, tractors and some forklifts often run 24V.
- Exactly what's happening: no crank, slow crank, clicking, warning lights, a smell or smoke.
- When it started, and anything that changed recently, like a new battery or accessory.
- Where the vehicle is, including the block name or shed if it's on a property, and how to get in.
- Whether there's shade or shelter, and power, if they might need it.
Questions worth asking
A few questions up front save confusion later. A good auto electrician won't mind answering them:
- Do you cover my town, and is there a travel or callout fee?
- Do you work on my type of vehicle, such as trucks, farm machinery, forklifts or hybrids?
- If my job involves air conditioning, do you have a licensed technician for refrigerant work?
- Can you give me a written quote, or an hourly rate and an estimate, before you start?
- What warranty do you give on parts and labour?
- How do I pay, and do you offer accounts for farm or fleet work?
Booking around heat and harvest
Sunraysia's summer changes how auto electricians work. Bureau of Meteorology figures for Mildura Airport show about 34 days a year at 35°C or more. On those days, flat batteries and air conditioning faults spike, and mobile auto electricians get busy fast. If your job isn't urgent, book it for autumn or spring. If it is urgent, ask for an early morning slot. Working on a hot bonnet in full sun at 3 pm is slow and uncomfortable for everyone.
Harvest and vintage are the other pressure point. When grapes and citrus are coming off, utes, tractors, harvesters and forklifts are all working at once, and a breakdown hurts. Growers who book a pre-season check of batteries, lights and charging systems in the quiet months usually have fewer callouts later. If you run several machines, ask about a regular service visit.
Understanding the cost
Callout fees, hourly rates and parts costs vary between businesses, and between a simple battery swap and a hard-to-find fault. Remote properties and after-hours callouts usually cost more. Our guide on how much auto electricians charge explains what goes into a bill.
Fault-finding is the hardest part to price, because nobody knows how long it will take until they start. Ask for an estimate and agree on a limit before they go past it. Our guide on getting a quote for an auto electrical problem has more on what to expect.
Simple checks before you call
A few safe checks can save a callout, or help the auto electrician find the fault faster. Look at the battery terminals for white or green crust, and check the clamps are tight. Check the fuse for the item that has stopped working. Our guide on how to check and replace a fuse shows where to look.
Know when to stop. Never work on high-voltage hybrid or EV systems, airbags or fixed 240V wiring. Those jobs are for licensed professionals only. If you smell burning or see smoke, turn off the engine, get clear and call for help.
Finding someone local
Start with the page for your area. Our Mildura area page covers the Victorian towns, and our Buronga page covers the NSW side near the bridge. Each lists the common local jobs and the auto electricians who cover that area. Take your time, ask the questions above, and pick someone who explains the job clearly.

Questions Mildura drivers ask
Will a Mildura auto electrician come to Wentworth?
Some do, but Wentworth is about 34 km from Mildura, so expect a travel charge. When you call, say exactly where the vehicle is, describe the fault and ask what the callout will cost. Giving clear details helps them bring the right parts, so they can fix it in one visit.
Can a mobile auto electrician fix my car air conditioning?
Many can handle the electrical side, such as fans, relays, switches and compressor clutches. Work on the refrigerant needs a licensed technician, so ask whether they hold the right licence. Some air conditioning jobs need equipment that's easier to use in a workshop, so they may ask you to bring the car in.
Can an auto electrician do my NSW safety check?
A NSW safety check must be done at an Authorised Inspection Scheme station. Some workshops are authorised, but most mobile auto electricians aren't. They can fix lighting and electrical faults before the check, so your vehicle has a better chance of passing. Check Transport for NSW for current rules.
