Buronga and Wentworth sit across the Murray from Mildura in New South Wales, in the Wentworth Shire Council area. Vehicles here are NSW-registered, so NSW rego and safety check rules apply, and the work runs from industrial trucks to outback touring rigs and boat trailers.

Suburbs in Across the river

The NSW side of Sunraysia is small in population but busy on the road. Buronga, linked to Mildura by the George Chaffey Bridge, is the industrial base of Wentworth Shire and sits where the Silver City Highway heads north to Broken Hill. Wentworth, further west at the junction of the Murray and Darling rivers, is the region's oldest town and a former river port. People cross the bridges every day for work, shopping and school, but their vehicles follow NSW rules, which shapes the work as much as the heat and the long outback roads do.

Common auto electrical jobs in Across the river

These jobs come up often on the NSW side of the river.

Getting through the NSW safety check

Transport for NSW says most light vehicles more than five years old need a yearly safety inspection before rego renewal. Blown globes, faulty indicators and cracked lenses are simple fixes, but they can fail the check. A quick walk around with someone working the brake pedal and indicators shows up most problems. Our guide on why indicators flash fast explains the most common indicator fault.

Heading north to the outback

The Silver City Highway starts at a roundabout on the Sturt Highway in Buronga and runs north through Wentworth to Broken Hill and beyond. Drivers heading that way, or to unsealed roads into national parks, need reliable power for fridges, lights and radios. A dual battery with a DC-DC charger is the usual answer. Our guide on how a dual battery system works explains the basics.

After high water

Wentworth has a long flood history. In 1956 both the Murray and Darling flooded at once and levee banks were built to protect the town, and the Murray rose again in late 2022. Vehicles parked in low spots or driven through water can develop electrical faults weeks later as moisture corrodes connectors. If a car has been in floodwater, don't try to start it. Watch out for any burning smell or smoke from car wiring.
