The Victorian side of Sunraysia takes in Mildura, Irymple, Red Cliffs and Merbein, all in the Mildura Rural City Council area. Auto electrical work here is shaped by long hot summers, irrigated vineyards and orchards, and big distances by highway.

Suburbs in Mildura

Mildura grew out of the Chaffey brothers' irrigation colony in the late 1880s, and the towns around it still run on grapes, citrus and other irrigated crops. Mildura itself is the service centre, with Deakin Avenue carrying the Sturt Highway to the George Chaffey Bridge and NSW. Irymple and Red Cliffs sit south along the Calder Highway among vineyards and packing sheds, while Merbein lies west on the river. That spread means the work swings from city car batteries and air conditioning to farm utes, tractors, trucks and boat trailers.

Common auto electrical jobs in Mildura

A few kinds of job turn up right across the Victorian side of Sunraysia.

Batteries cooked by summer

The Bureau of Meteorology's records for Mildura Airport show an average of about 34 days a year at 35°C or more, and the station hit 48.6°C on 27 January 2026. Heat under the bonnet speeds up the chemical wear inside a battery, so many batteries here fail sooner than the label suggests, often with little warning. A test before summer and again in autumn catches most of them. Our guide on how to test a car battery shows what the numbers mean.

Air conditioning that has to work

January in Mildura averages a top of about 32.6°C, and a run of hot days is common. An air conditioner that blows warm is more than an annoyance when you've got kids or workers in the car. Plenty of faults are electrical rather than gas: a dead condenser fan, a failed relay, a blown fuse or a tired compressor clutch. Any work on the refrigerant itself needs a licensed technician. See common car air conditioning problems for the usual causes.

Farm and freight vehicles

Mildura sits where the Sturt and Calder highways meet, so trucks carrying fruit, grapes and freight are part of daily traffic. On the blocks, utes, tractors, sprayers and forklifts all rely on 12V or 24V systems that cop dust, vibration and heat. Lighting, charging and starting faults are the bread and butter of the work. A small spare kit of globes, fuses and relays saves a lot of lost time during harvest, when nobody wants a machine sitting idle.

Boats and the Murray

The Murray runs along the northern edge of Mildura and Merbein, and plenty of locals launch a boat on weekends. Fresh water is kinder than salt, but trailer lights that get dunked and then sit hot in the sun still crack, fill with water and corrode. Sealed LED lights and a clean, greased plug go a long way. If a light is out, start with our guide on why trailer lights aren't working.
